Handmade wall art: why choosing for textile art?
We're surrounded by interiors that all look the same. The same prints from the same webshops, the same posters in the same frames. That's fine if it makes you happy. But if you're looking for something that truly fits you, handmade wall art is worth considering.
Every handmade piece is unique. Not as a marketing term, but literally: the colours fall slightly differently, the textures are never identical, and the material carries the traces of the making process. That makes it personal in a way a printed canvas simply cannot be.
Textile as wall art: art you want to touch
Of all the materials you can hang on your wall, textile has something special. Where a painting or print stays flat, textile wall art literally brings a third dimension into your space. The yarns, the knots, the structure, you want to touch it.
Textile wall decor also has a practical advantage that's often overlooked: it absorbs sound. In a time when we have more and more open spaces and hard floors, a textile wall piece can make a real difference to the acoustics of your living room. It's wall art that's not just beautiful, but functional too.
The tufting technique: modern craftsmanship
At Filo Arts, I create textile wall art using the tufting technique. With a tufting gun, yarns are shot through a tightly stretched cloth, thread by thread.
The process is intensive, a large piece can take weeks to complete. Every colour choice is deliberate, every line is guided by hand. The result is a wall piece that is both artwork and craft.
All my pieces are made with 100% New Zealand wool, the most durable and highest quality yarn available for tufting. It's soft, colourfast, and ages beautifully over time. If you have specific preferences or requirements, I'm happy to work with other materials such as acrylic or cotton yarn. Every piece is finished by hand with a durable backing and arrives ready to hang.
What kind of interior does it work In?
The beauty of textile wall art is that it suits virtually any interior. Whether you have a minimalist Scandinavian home or a warm bohemian apartment, the right piece adds exactly what's missing.
In a sleek, modern interior, a textile wall piece works as a counterpoint: it brings warmth and organic forms into a space that might otherwise feel too clinical. In an already cosy interior, it enhances the atmosphere and adds texture that completes the room.
Large pieces work beautifully as a statement above a sofa or bed. Smaller works look great as part of a gallery wall, combined with prints or photographs.
Something that's yours alone
Perhaps the ultimate advantage of handmade wall art is the simplest: nobody else has the same piece. In a world of mass production and algorithms showing us all the same products, that's rare and valuable.
At Filo Arts, alongside the existing collection, you can also have a fully custom piece made. You choose the colours, the size, and the design, I make it by hand for you. That's when your wall art becomes truly personal.
