Custom tufted wall hanging: how does it work?
A wall hanging that fits your space, your colors, your story. It sounds complicated, but at Filo Arts the process is surprisingly straightforward. Here's a step-by-step look at what a custom commission involves, from first idea to finished piece on your wall.
Step 1: You talk, I listen
Every commission starts with a conversation. What kind of atmosphere are you going for? Do you have a specific colour in mind, or just a feeling? Maybe you've saved a photo, a colour palette from an interior magazine, or a memory you'd like to translate into a wall piece. That's enough to get started.
You don't need to be a designer. That's my job.
Step 2: From idea to sketch
Based on our conversation, I'll create an initial sketch. Not a detailed technical drawing, but a visual direction. You can adjust it, combine elements, or start over entirely. Only once we're both happy with the design, I start tufting.
Step 3: The making
Tufting is handwork. Using a tufting gun, yarn is pushed through a tightly stretched backing cloth, strand by strand. A larger piece can take me up to hundred hours or more. Throughout the process I'll send you photos, so you can follow your piece as it comes to life.
I work with 100% New Zealand sheep's wool. It's softer, stronger and richer in color than synthetic yarn, and it stays beautiful for years.
Step 4: Finishing and delivery
Once the tufting is done, the back is finished by hand and the piece is mounted on a frame. I use oak as standard, but other wood finishes are possible. The result arrives ready to hang.
What does a custom piece cost?
The price depends on the size, the complexity of the design and the materials used. A smaller piece (around 40 × 40 cm) starts at approximately €300. Larger or more detailed work costs more. I always share a price indication before I start, so there are no surprises.
